Art Wares

The Art Wares Program was created to expose young men to the fine arts and give them an outlet for their creative energies. Guided by the National Standards for Art Instruction, the Art Wares Program is overseen by a professional ceramicist who works individually with each participant to help him create unique ceramic art. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the art produced in this program are donated to the needy and to the Pro-Vision scholarship fund, reinforcing in these young men the importance of education and giving back to the community.  For more Art Ware information and pictures, please view our Vision Store page.

Archery

In 2010-2011, the Pro-Vision Archery Team will begin its first season of competition. Constructed in partnership with local foundations, the archery field is used as an after school activity and in the Manhood Development Academy. Firing from distances of up to 50 feet, Pro-Vision archers develop hand eye coordination, build upper body strength, and sharpen their concentration. Developing these skills not only improves students’ physical fitness and confidence, but also helps them become more focused and disciplined in the classroom.
Flag Football

2010-2011 is the first year Pro-Vision will have a competitive flag football team.  Practices and competition will take place on the Pro-Vision football field, which serves as a multi-purpose sports field for use in physical education, after school activities, and community gatherings.

Funding to construct the field was generously donated by the Houston Texans as part of an effort to promote active lifestyles in adolescents and to draw in the surrounding community.

The field was also designed to be a retention pond whose water can be re-routed to irrigate the Urban Farm. Eventually, the field will include an athletic track around its perimeter.
Basketball

2010-2011 is the first year Pro-Vision will have a competitive basketball team.

The team will practice on the Pro-Vision basketball court, which was built by Houston Basketball Courts in 2008. The court features a shock absorbing “Flex Court” surface, which reduces the strain on joints and muscles, decreasing the likelihood of injury. This surface also absorbs much less heat than asphalt surfaces, keeping its temperatures lower and its participants cooler. The concrete underneath the basketball court was designed so that it can be used as the foundation of an eventual indoor gym. The court also has 6 high quality adjustable goals and is used extensively in physical education classes, after school activities, and the Manhood Development Academy.
Boxing

In addition to daily exercise during school hours, Pro-Vision has boxing as an after school activity. Boxing provides students with an opportunity to increase physical activity and rewards discipline and focus, as these skills are necessary in order to perform well in the sport. By incorporating the type of exercise all Pro-Vision students are engaged in during morning calisthenics, boxing builds on physical fitness skills that students are acquiring already. Boxing as sport is a constructive way to channel the aggressive energy that male students often have.  Boxing develops and rewards the mental and moral strength, integrity, and overall wellbeing that Pro-Vision promotes in every facet of its curriculum.
Community Garden

Under the supervision of a professional horticultural therapist, Pro-Vision students grow a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and greens in the Pro-Vision Community Garden. In addition to gaining invaluable knowledge about proper diet and nutrition, students help provide a source of fresh produce to a community whose access to anything but fast food is limited.

The community and Pro-Vision students maintain a symbiotic relationship. Students are strengthened by working side by side with community volunteers, and the community is strengthened by the produce from the Garden and ultimately the young men of integrity it helps to shape. The Community Garden demonstrates the larger context in which students exists both communally and in the natural world. It is also integrated piece of the Pro-Vision science curriculum.
Tutoring

Because Pro-Vision students enter school 2-3 grade levels behind in math and reading, supplementing in school instruction with high doses of after school tutoring is vital to their long term academic success. Small group and one-on-one tutoring is available for two hours before school and two hours after school, ensuring that no matter what a particular student’s schedule, he will have an opportunity to take advantage of this service. Using bi-monthly benchmark tests such as Star Math and Star Reading, tutors closely monitor student progress and adjust their instructional strategies according to each individual student’s strengths and weaknesses. These tutors also work closely with full time Pro-Vision instructors to coordinate their instructional strategies. This level of customization and focus is not limited to students who are struggling academically, but to every single student who is enrolled at Pro-Vision.
Speech and Debate Team

2010-2011 marks the second year that Pro-Vision will sponsor a competitive speech and debate team. Led by a former college debater, Pro-Vision students meet for practice several times a week and travel on weekends to local speech and debate tournaments.

Debate is an immensely powerful tool for reshaping at risk students attitudes towards themselves and towards the learning process. Debate’s fast paced and competitive atmosphere taps into young boys’ naturally competitive nature to make learning fun. Students are daily exposed to a wide variety of academic subjects, and are encouraged to think and act creatively. Through being forced to constantly defend and examine their own ideas and beliefs, participants become objective and passionate thinkers who are not afraid to stand up for themselves and others. Not surprisingly, research indicates that the writing and critical thinking ability of students who participate in debate increases greatly.  This feature is particularly important for Title I students, as they have little or no access to the language rich cultural experiences that students in higher socio-economic brackets receive.

Literacy Through Photography

LTP is a year-round, in-school program where teachers are provided with carefully designed lesson plans that offer new writing techniques, basic photography skills, and effective teaching strategies that increase visual and verbal literacy while building cognitive thinking skills, self-esteem, and awareness of others.

Students increase visual and verbal literacy while building cognitive thinking skills, self-esteem, and awareness of each other. The LTP curriculum provides students with meaningful subject matter to help them write about their own photographs and their own lives with confidence.
