The Manhood Development Program was established 20 years ago as a way to break the cycle of self-destructive behavior exhibited by a generation young men growing up in Houston’s most underserved neighborhoods. Believing that many of the problems facing these youth stemmed from a lack of significant adult interaction, a group of dedicated individuals created the Manhood Development Academy as a way to develop the character and integrity of at risk young men by combining close mentoring relationships with exposure to situations that reinforce moral and ethical thinking. The Manhood Development Program was the founding program of Pro-Vision, and its relationship centered philosophy continues to inform everything Pro-Vision does.
The Manhood Development Academy began in the lower income neighborhoods of Houston where a group of concerned adults encountered young and predominantly African-American boys who seemed completely disconnected from the various communal fixtures that had helped previous generations make it from those precarious adolescent years into adulthood. What they saw were young males without any significant adult interaction. It was clear that an entire segment of the population was coming of age in an era when the very fabric of communal life seemed to have dissolved. The systems that had once provided a safety net had unraveled such that young men were not only without supervision at home, but were also without role models in their neighborhoods. Churches and schools were no longer the pillars of strength that they had been in previous generations, and there were not even reliable alternative family systems to catch those whose families had come undone.
In response to these challenges, the Manhood Development Program was created to teach young men moral, ethical, and purposeful living through close mentoring relationships with adult men. Meeting on the weekends and after school, the program uses cultural exposure, social development, and community service projects to develop respectful and considerate youth who take responsibility for their lives and instill this philosophy into others. At the core of the Manhood Development Program are the Pro-Vision Coaches, who lead and guide the young men in the activities and curriculum. These mentoring relationships form the basis for teaching our young men the foundation of healthy family relationships.
The Manhood Development Program strongly emphasizes the inclusion of parents in the workings of the Manhood process in order to address each family's needs. Led by professional counselors and experienced Coaches, Manhood Development Program offers parenting skills training and self-help workshops which enable families to develop appropriate avenues of self-expression. The Manhood Development program has realized that their members' success is measured by each one finding their life purpose and valuing service to their communities and accountability for themselves. The Manhood Development Program confronts head-on the low motivation syndrome experienced by many young men, and replaces it with a sense of purpose and hope.
