Extra-Curricular Opportunity: Enriching the Lives of Students Outside of the Classroom
After school programs are paramount to the scholastic achievement of the young men and young women that attend Pro-Vision. By participating in rewarding and enriching programs designed to enhance the educational experience, students expand their horizons by opening the doors to achievement. From programs that enrich the mind such as music and chess, to activities that strengthen the body like track and basketball, students obtain new skills and knowledge while building and strengthening their interpersonal peer relationships. Pro-Vision implements a holistic approach to all of our programs and employs adult mentors to provide guidance to the students while simultaneously letting the young men and women in the programs develop a sense of self-reliance.
The after school programs at Pro-Vision offer a variety of focuses. A student who displays a profound interest in the arts may choose to participate in art-related programs. Pro-Vision offers a ceramics program which offers a comprehensive approach to the fine arts. The ceramics programs implements time-management skills, decision making, and the importance of staying dedicated to long-term commitments while learning the craft of ceramics. The program is instructed by a professional ceramicist who works individually with students, with special attention to each student’s learning style.
The music program also offers an experience in working in the arts. Music has always been an integral part of education, stimulating the brain of students while allowing for creativity. Students who participate in the music program at Pro-Vision not only build their self-confidence, but build and develop skills fundamental to critical thinking.
Students who wish to participate in physically enriching programs have a variety of programs to select from. Basketball, track, football, archery, and boxing offer the student with a keen interest in athletics a way to enhance their physical health while learning the importance of sportsmanship and the benefits of working as a team. The sports programs at Pro-Vision create a balanced environment of emotional and physical well-being, leading to a fulfilling extra-curricular experience.
Students who wish to further employ their critical thinking skills have the opportunity to participate in the Chess or Spoken Word Programs. The chess program teaches young men and women the importance of strategy, the virtues of patience, self-confidence, and the values of proper decision making and logical thinking. Participants of the Spoken Word program are offered the opportunity to learn lifelong lessons in research, listening skills, respect, and develop a sense of passion in supporting one’s own beliefs. Participants of the Speech Program participate in the debates, which instills confidence in oneself while teaching the value of respecting the opinions of others.
During the Pro-Vision Academy High School‘s daily Advisory class, the College and Career Readiness Counselor conducts individualized planning sessions for each student member. Also, the newly formed College-Bound Club meets after school each Monday through Thursday. Membership, which is automatic for all juniors and seniors, is also open to any other interested student. Benefits to membership will include early access to college and career activities/field trips, ACT/SAT Test prep, financial aid counseling, guest mentors and speakers, mock interviews, resume writing workshops, college life discussions, and career etiquette training. The group’s purpose is to create a school culture that promotes 100% College and Career preparation and success.
The after school programs at Pro-Vision are crucial to student development and support our mission to inspire hope and purpose in all of our students. By developing self-confidence and allowing opportunity for achievement, the overall educational experience of the student is augmented, and students reap benefits of the skills they learn for the rest of their lives. These after school programs do not only enhance the student’s education experience at Pro-Vision, but students in turn utilize the skills they have learned in their interactions with their community, causing a lasting and positive effect.
